Ravita Meghwar: Profile, Wiki, Conversion and Marriage

Ravita Meghwar has become the focal point of discussion about forced conversion in Pakistan. Hindu communities across Pakistan in general and Sindh in particular are protesting and alleging that the underage Ravita was forcibly converted to Islam and then married to a man who is twice of her age. The family has alleged that she was first abducted by the influential Syeds and then married. 

There have been increasing cases of abduction of young Hindu girls followed by forced conversion to Islam and marriage to some old Muslim man in recent times. Minorities in Pakistan are feeling insecure. The case of Ravita has given them an opportunity to raise the issue. Fortunately, many well – known Muslim Civil Rights activists have also come forward and took part in these protests.



Profile of Ravita Meghwar

Ravita was born in 2001. Her parents – Satram Das Meghwar and Haqu Meghwar – are residing in a village with other family members. Ravita being a beautiful girl has always been eyesore for Muslim youths around the area. She had to quit study because of continuous eve teasing by Muslims.

One night few Syed young men attacked the home of Ravita. They abducted her and few days later forcibly married her to Syed Shah who is 36 years old. 

Marriage under 16 years is an offence in Sindh. Conversion under 16 is also not easy. To make it possible, abductors put her age as 18 on the marriage registration as well as on conversion slip. 

Ravita on her part has also come forward and openly said that she is married to Shah and she is quite happy. She further added that conversion and marriage were done on her own will and no one forced to do so. She said that she is in deep love with Shah and would like to spend her life with him. 

It is not clear whether Ravita is being forced to say these things, or she was really in love with a man who is 20 years older to her. 

The Court has already taking strict action against this alleged forced conversion and kidnapping. Hopefully, the truth will come out and the resentment among the minority communities will be curtailed.
