ALS IAS Coaching: Personal Review
Preparation for UPSC Civil Services requires
holistic approach and balance attitude. You can’t simply ignore one part of the
syllabus. GS has become the backbone of the entire examination pattern. The
syllabus is quite bulky and needs different approach. After getting low marks
in my first attempt in GS (UPSC Mains), I decided to join a coaching institute
especially for it. I had experience with Vajiram and Ravi (for Psychology), and
was aware of the methodology they adopt for GS. After going through lots of
reviews and consulting seniors, I decided to join Alternative Learning System –
ALS IAS coaching institute in New Delhi. My main drive
was, undoubtedly, Mr. Jojo Mathews.
ALS has one of the best team to teach General Studies (though, I don’t like the teaching standard of all lecturers). The first class was taken by Mr. Jojo Mathews. It was something like an orientation class. He showed aspirants the way to crack the exam. This class was more than enough for me to plan my study for next four months. Afterwards, Mr. Mathews continue to take classes (he took around 12 classes) of Indian Polity. He was simply scintillating. Indian Constitution and Polity had become a cakewalk for me and my friends. In one class, he announced that the remaining part of Indian Polity will be completed by Mr. Manish Gautam. We didn’t like this idea. Manish Gautam is not the teacher we wanted. It was tough to comprehend what he was lecturing. Lots of important section of Indian Polity remained tough to understand for us.
After Indian Polity, it was the turn of Indian Economy (another very important part of General Studies and Essay sections of Mains). Arunesh Singh was the lecturer. He taught quite lucidly. Tough concepts become easier for me.
I learned lots of new concepts in his class. He also showed us the way to write long answers without losing direction. His notes (particularly taken from Economic and Political Weekly) were quite refreshing.
Science and Technology class was again taken by Jojo Mathews. After taking few classes, he again left it. Another new teacher came, and he was no match of Mr. Mathews.
The classes for Indian History and Geography were of great standard. These two sections of GS had always been a matter of concern for me. However, after going through all classes of ALS, I still feel quite confident in History and Geography.
Statistics was a disappointment for me at ALS.
After the completion of all classes, Jojo Mathews again returned for Current Affairs. As you might know, his Current Affairs book for UPSC Civil Services is the market leader. His classes were also great where he tried to cover all important national and international events without losing direction.
In the end, I don’t find any hesitation in recommending ALS IAS Coaching institute for UPSC Civil Services aspirants. As far as, ALS for optional subject is concerned, I don’t think that the institute rank anywhere (except Geography, to an extent).
